Handling Eye Infections Due to Chlamydia Trachomatis Bacteria

Trachoma is a bacterial infection that affects the eyes. Trachoma bacteria spread through direct contact with the eyes, eyelids, or nose of people who are infected. This bacterium is contagious, and also always affects both eyes. If not treated immediately, it can lead to trachoma blindness. Data from the WHO, approximately 8 million people in the world are blind due to bacterial trachoma.

- Cause

Trachoma is caused by certain subtypes, namely Chlamydia trachomatis, these bacteria can also cause sexually transmitted diseases. Trachoma is spread through contact with discharge from the eyes or nose of people who are infected. These bacteria can also be spread through hands, clothes, towels and insects.

- Symptoms in the eye

The main signs and symptoms in the early stages of trachoma is itching and eye mucus or pus. When this situation has been deteriorating eye will show signs such as:

1. Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
2. Blurred vision
3. Eye pain

- Treatment of trachoma

Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child feel itching, irritation or discharge from the eyes, especially if you have recently traveled to an area affected trachoma outbreak.

Treatment depends on the stage of the disease trachoma. In the early stages of trachoma affected eye will usually be given antibiotics alone. Drugs that are commonly used are shaped ointment, such as tetracycline and azitromisinoral (Zithromax). Surgery is the treatment of late stages of trachoma, which may require surgery on the eye.
